Stories, Reels or Carousel: which Instagram format does your restaurant need in 2026?
"Should I post Stories, Reels or Carousels?" — a restaurant owner asks this almost every time. The short answer: all three, but each format does a different job. And far more important than the format itself is whether your posts look like one recognisable brand or a random pile. Let's break it down using Viva (Umag), a restaurant we produced a full content set for.
What is the difference between Stories, Reels and Carousel?
In short: Stories are for daily contact, Reels for reach and new audiences, Carousels for engagement and saves. By job it looks like this:
| Format | Job | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Stories | Daily warm-up, "here and now" | 24 hours |
| Reels | Reach, new audience, brand showcase | Long-term in recommendations |
| Carousel | Engagement, saves, explaining | Long-term on the profile |
When does a restaurant need Stories?
Stories are your daily contact with the guest: today's special, behind the scenes, a new dish. At FormaInk we keep them short — 10–16 seconds — and build them as a mini-story: problem → insight → takeaway. In our experience that length gets watched to the end without tiring the viewer, while brand colours, fonts and light animation make Stories feel alive and recognisable.
When does a restaurant need Reels?
Reels are the premium showcase: this is where the brand presents itself at its best and reaches new people. We shoot them like this: an opening frame with close-up details of the dish, smooth transitions (match-cut, whip-pan, slow motion), macro shots of textures and atmosphere, an emotional accent — the person and the product — and a final frame with the logo and brand colours.
Why does the Reel cover matter as much as the Reel itself?
A Reel plays in the feed and recommendations, but its cover stays in your profile grid forever. Consistent covers — same style, colour, logo — turn a profile into a tidy showcase instead of a jumble of random frames. It's the first thing a guest sees when they open the account: a thought-through cover makes the whole grid more appealing and noticeably raises the urge to follow.

When does a restaurant need Carousels?
A carousel is a visual story people swipe through: the menu, before/after, a selection of dishes. The first slide is a strong visual and a short headline, then seamless transitions (the photo continues onto the next slide) and soft animation. The longer a guest swipes, the stronger the engagement, and professional photos of details and textures reinforce the premium feel of the brand.

Why should every format share one brand style?
This is what separates a brand from a random account. Stories, Reels, carousels and their covers, made as one set — the same colours, fonts, elements — read as one recognisable brand. A ready-made Canva template can't do that: thousands use it, and your post looks like everyone else's. A branded template built for a specific restaurant makes the content recognisable from the first frame — before the guest has even read the name.

How much does a set of branded Instagram templates cost?
A one-time profile and template setup — grid, highlights (5 templates) and content recommendations — costs €50–€100 and takes 2–3 working days. If you need not just the design but done-for-you management, there's the restaurant package: content plan, 12 posts, stories and professional photography — €400–€600 per month. The full price list and scope is on the SMM and content for restaurants → page.
